Government Unveils “Wakehurst Parkway Gondola System” to Finally Solve Flood Related Traffic Delays

WAKEHURST PARKWAY, PRNB — In a historic infrastructure announcement that will no doubt create a legacy framework for incredible future infrastructure outcomes, the People’s Republic of the Northern Beaches (PRNB) has confirmed plans for a fully alpine-style gondola transport system above Wakehurst Parkway to bypass the road’s chronic flooding and traffic chaos.

The proposal follows decades of failed attempts to control the adjoining riparian area along the stretch of road between Middle Creek Reserve and Oxford Falls Road using primitive solutions like road upgrades, drainage and common sense.  Instead, commuters will soon float elegantly above the floodwaters in air conditioned European-style gondola cabins, offering panoramic views of Narrabeen Lagoon and the occasional stranded Toyota Corolla below.

PRNB officials say the costs will be big, but totally appropriate for the stretch of road that has been closed due to flooding an average of 7 times a year since 2020, and will finally resolve the ongoing connection issues between the Northern Beaches and Northern Beaches Hospital, particularly for residents who find driving around a flooded road “deeply inconvenient between pilates and lunch.”

How the Wakehurst Alpine Gondola System Will Work

The gondola line will run directly above Wakehurst Parkway, allowing commuters to glide effortlessly over the floodplain like wealthy ski tourists avoiding a queue at Thredbo.

Gondola Terminals will include:

• Narrabeen Lagoon Terminal

• Oxford Falls Base-Camp Terminal

• Northern Beaches Hospital Summit Terminal

A review of the naming ocnvention is underway because using the words ‘Terminal’ and ‘Hospital’ in the same sentence is pretty grim.

Each gondola cabin will hold 6 passengers, or 3 passengers and 2 Labradoodles / Groodles, whichever arrives first.

PRNB officials confirmed the system will run every 14 seconds during peak traffic, with slightly longer intervals during yoga hours.

Park-and-Ride Facilities for Oversized SUVs

To support the system, two major gondola park-and-ride hubs will be built at:

  • Middle Creek Reserve (Eastern Terminal)
  • Vacant land opposite Northern Beaches Hospital (Western Terminal)

The facilities will accommodate residents who wish to leave a second or third vehicle parked permanently at the opposite end of the gondola, a practice PRNB planners described as: “A completely normal lifestyle choice for Northern Beaches residents who are largely unaffected by the ‘poor people’s cost of living crisis’.”

The car parks include charging stations, bike racks, surf racks and the standard over use of contradictory parking signs. In addition to this, each parking bay will be over sized to accommodate the demographics preferred choice of obscenely oversized SUV.

PRNB Government Officials Praise the Vision

PRNB Minister for Elevated Transport and Scenic Commuting, Dr Sebastian Harrington, said the gondola was the logical next step in modern infrastructure for the People's Republic. “For decades governments have tried to fight the floodwaters. Our approach is simpler. We just go above them.”

Harrington added that the gondola system would also reduce traffic congestion, carbon emissions and the emotional distress caused by seeing a Kia in the right lane. “This is about enriching the Northern Beaches commuters by incorporating an Alpine lifestyle they currently don’t have.”

Local Residents React

Reaction from locals has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, particularly among residents who already own multiple vehicles.

Newport resident Tristan, 42, owner of three SUVs and a jet ski, welcomed the plan. “Finally some practical infrastructure. I’ll just leave the Range Rover at Narrabeen and the BMW at the hospital side. The Tesla can stay at home for the nanny.”

Another resident, Bronte from Whale Beach, said the gondola would dramatically improve the hospital commute. “Last time the parkway flooded it took me 48 minutes to get to the hospital for my botox. Forty-eight minutes. I could have been on a gondola in Thredbo by then.”

Oxford Falls Station to Include Après-Commute Facilities

The Oxford Falls mid-station will feature a small alpine-style village including:

  • Artisanal sourdough kiosk
  • Cryotherapy recovery lounge
  • A boutique selling emergency activewear
  • Mulled wine year round

PRNB planners confirmed the area will be known as “The Falls From Height Village.”

Concerns Raised by Mainland Experts

Some transport experts have questioned the need for a gondola, suggesting basic flood mitigation and road upgrades may be more practical for 10% of the cost.

However PRNB officials dismissed the criticism. “That is the kind of mainland thinking that has failed this road for decades,” said Minister Harrington. “They see a flooded road and think ‘fix the road.’ This is the People’s Republic of the Northern Beaches, we see a flooded road and think ‘ski resort.’”

Construction Timeline

If approved, construction of the Wakehurst Alpine Gondola System will begin immediately after the commencement of the other innovative republic building infrastructure solutions, including:

  • The Dee Why Metro Station
  • The Bellagio style redevelopment of the Manly Corso Dribble Fountains
  • The Newport Bypass Tunnel and
  • The Manly Dam Hydro-station Reconfiguration

PRNB officials say the gondola could be operational as early as winter 2029, just in time for residents to complain about it.
