Collaroy Tradie Refuses To Cancel Credit Card After Realising The Thief Spends Less Than His Wife

COLLAROY, PRNB — A Collaroy tradie has confirmed he will not be cancelling his stolen credit card after reviewing the transactions and realising the thief is somehow doing less damage than his wife.

The card was allegedly stolen from his ute on Sunday afternoon, along with a half-eaten servo pie, three Bunnings receipts, a loose Allen key, and the emotional remains of a man who once thought a bathroom renovation would be “two quick weekends.” But after checking his banking app, local chippy Darren “Dazza” McKinnon said he was pleasantly surprised.

“I was expecting disaster,” he said. “But old mate bought fuel, a kebab and $87 worth of stuff from Bunnings. That’s basically a savings plan compared to my wife walking through Westfield with a coffee, a dream, and the dangerous confidence of someone who says, ‘I’m just having a look.’” Darren said he first became suspicious something was wrong when the card went 48 hours without a single transaction involving activewear, scented candles, throw cushions, linen that “breathes,” ceramic bowls nobody is allowed to use, or skincare made from crushed Norwegian moonlight and the tears of financially exhausted husbands.

“That’s when I knew it had been stolen,” he explained. “No one in my house spends that little unless they’re unconscious, overseas, or physically trapped under a fallen Kmart homewares display.” According to Darren, the thief’s spending pattern has been “measured, responsible and frankly inspirational,” with purchases limited to basic survival items and one emergency Bunnings run that Darren described as “fiscally conservative by Northern Beaches standards, he didn’t even tap it at a boutique homewares shop,” Darren said. “Not once. No diffuser reeds. No matching outdoor cushions. No $64 candle called something like Coastal Divorce. The bloke’s got discipline.”

His wife, Mel, has rejected the claims, saying the thief simply lacks vision. “Of course he’s spending less,” she said. “He’s just buying basics. I’m investing in the household brand and lifestyle. Does Darren want a home, or does he want to live in a beige hostage situation with one towel from 2014 and a couch that still smells faintly like his bachelor years?” Mel also defended several recent purchases, including a $310 lamp “for warmth,” a linen duvet cover “for emotional regulation,” and a decorative ladder that Darren says “doesn’t climb anything, hold anything, or justify Federation. Mel argues "that ladder pulls the room together, Darren wouldn’t understand. He thinks ambience is changing the smoke alarm battery.”

Police have urged Darren to cancel the card immediately, but he says he’s monitoring the situation.

“At this stage the bloke’s bought lunch, petrol and a packet of screws,” Darren said. “Honestly, if he keeps this up, I might give him the joint account. At least he knows when to stop. Last time Mel went to Westfield for shampoo, we somehow ended up with a new rug, six towels, a salad bowl and a ceramic duck.”

Darren said he is now considering leaving the card active until after teh EOFY sales, claiming the thief may accidentally help the family reach its savings goals before the end of the financial year. “If he can keep weekly spending under Mel’s standard Tuesday, we might finally refinance, fix the deck, or replace the Weber cover I’ve been asking about since 2019.”

Mel has since been seen calmly holding Darren’s phone, deleting the banking app “for everyone’s wellbeing,” while reminding him that “financial transparency is important, but not when it’s being used as a weapon by a man who owns five identical grey T-shirts.”

Neighbours say tensions escalated after Darren referred to the thief as “the most financially responsible person currently using my card,” prompting Mel to announce an urgent trip to Warringah Mall to process the emotional betrayal.

Should Darren cancel the card, or has Collaroy finally found a budgeting strategy that works?
