NORTHERN BEACHES, PRNB — A flood of formal complaints has been lodged across the People’s Republic of the Northern Beaches after residents reported being trapped behind large migrating groups of Middle Aged Men In Lycra, also known as MAMILs, who apparently believe Mona Vale Road is the final stage of the Tour de France.
The complaints, now referred to internally as Operation Midlife Crisis, describe scenes of chaos stretching from Manly to Palm Beach every Saturday morning between 5:12am and whenever Simon finishes his second piccolo.
Witnesses say the men dress up like radioactive highlighters and travel in tightly packed collectives worth approximately $340,000 combined, despite moving slower uphill than an elderly cavoodle with arthritis.
“They scream ‘ON YOUR RIGHT!’ and ‘CAR BACK!’ like they’re special forces entering Fallujah,” said one Dee Why resident. “Mate, you’re a 52-year-old real estate agent named Darren riding to Avalon Bakery in shoes that click aggressively and look like ski boots.”
Locals claim every group contains the exact same characters.
There’s Simon, who owns six bikes but insists they’re all “for different conditions.”
There’s Brett, who somehow mentions his FTP before you’ve even ordered coffee.
There’s Darren, who reminds everyone he “used to race” despite nobody asking and nobody caring.
And then there’s Gary, whose entire personality now consists of saying “It’s not about speed” or "I'm not competitive" immediately before checking his Strava segment to compare against others.
Residents say the crisis reaches DEFCON 1 outside cafés where up to 19 bicycles are leaned against a single heritage-listed Norfolk pine while the riders spend four hours discussing:
One café owner admitted nobody has actually ordered breakfast in over two hours. “They just keep asking if banana bread counts as race nutrition.”
Several parents also reported emotional distress after watching fully grown men in fluorescent lycra refuse to stop at pedestrian crossings because “momentum is everything.”
One mother from Narrabeen said her children now believe every bald man wearing oversized Oakleys is either:
The PRNB Department of Road Superiority has defended the cyclists, confirming the men are simply “on a journey of self-discovery” after purchasing a $19,000 Cervélo and realising nobody at home cared.
“They’re not dangerous,” the department said. “Some are simply emotionally unavailable accountants, mortgage brokers and finance managers who discovered that buying carbon fibre was considerably easier than attending therapy.”
Authorities also confirmed that contrary to popular belief, MAMILs don’t actually travel in packs.
“They travel in mobile support groups.”
The situation escalated further last weekend after one rider reportedly screamed “STRAVA OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!” when another cyclist paused his Garmin near The Spit for 11 seconds. The accused rider has since been shunned by his group and downgraded to riding with people who wear flat pedals.
Meanwhile, independent research has found the average Northern Beaches MAMIL now spends more time analysing his ride than actually riding it. Experts estimate every one-hour ride is followed by approximately:
Residents are also warning newcomers not to accidentally make eye contact with a MAMIL. “What starts as ‘Morning mate’ somehow ends with a 28-minute lecture about cadence, electrolytes and why Shimano lost its way in 2019.”
Police are now urging residents to remain calm and avoid sudden movements near café clusters on weekends, particularly in areas heavily affected by aggressive conversations about tyre pressure, chain wax, ceramic bearings and whether riding indoors “counts.”
At this stage, authorities believe the only thing more fragile than a MAMIL’s carbon frame is his emotional state after being overtaken uphill by a 73-year-old grandmother on an e-bike carrying groceries, a cavoodle and two bags from Harris Farm.
The inquiry remains ongoing.
Early estimates suggest approximately 97% of Northern Beaches residents have already thought of someone while reading this article. The remaining 3% are almost certainly wearing lycra.
