NORTHERN BEACHES, PRNB — The People’s Republic of the Northern Beaches has been plunged into emotional chaos after the red and yellow flags were taken down across local beaches, forcing residents to confront the horrifying possibility that summer may, in fact, be over.
Despite weeks of cooler mornings, earlier sunsets and people pretending 22 degrees was “freezing,” many locals refused to accept the seasonal transition until lifeguards physically removed the beach flags in what witnesses described as “basically a funeral with sunscreen.”
The scenes were reportedly confronting. Children asked difficult questions. Adults stared silently at empty sand. One man in Freshwater placed his towel down between two imaginary flags and insisted he was “manifesting January.”
To their credit, lifeguards in the People’s Republic recorded 673 rescues, 3,841 first aid treatments and 520,616 preventative actions this season, most of which were believed to involve telling grown adults not to swim in the angry bit of water while they replied, “Relax mate, I’m local.” The real crisis, however, began when residents realised winter is now almost here and absolutely nobody is ready.
One Avalon man, still wearing boardshorts and zinc, was seen standing beside an empty lifeguard tower whispering, “But I only just got my summer personality back.” A Dee Why resident described the flag removal as “deeply premature,” despite arriving at the beach wearing a puffer vest, Ugg boots and carrying a takeaway coffee hot enough to remove fingerprints. “It’s still beach weather,” she said, shivering violently in tiny activewear. “You just need a hoodie, a blanket, a windbreak, a thermos, emotional support and a medically concerning amount of denial.”
Officials say the off-season can still be used productively. Residents are encouraged to visit the beach to complain about wind, photograph suspicious seaweed, ask where the flags went, blame council for temperature, and practise saying, “It’s not cold once you’re in,” before not going in.
Local businesses are also preparing for the seasonal shift, with cafés expected to replace iced lattes with warm beverages described as “soup for people who lease German SUVs.” Meanwhile, several residents have demanded council install temporary winter flags indoors at Warringah Mall so locals can continue walking between red and yellow objects while pretending their life has structure.
The Department of Seasonal Denial has reminded citizens that winter on the Northern Beaches means a brutal struggle for survival, with temperatures expected to occasionally fall below the emotional threshold of 16 degrees celsius.
“People need to prepare,” said a departmental spokesperson. “That means locating a jumper, checking whether last year’s trackies still fit, and accepting that sunset drinks now require knitwear, courage and at least one person saying, ‘Actually, it’s quite nice out of the wind.’”
Should council have warned locals summer was ending, or is removing the flags already too much reality for one peninsula to process?
